Moroccan Massage - is traditionally offered at the local baths or hammams in Morocco, and is an ancient custom of Islamic culture. 'Hammam' is derived from the Arabic for "spreader of warmth" and is a ritual hot-steam room that combines; a cleansing spot, social gathering, and gossip place and a relaxing brief getaway from the modern world. Hammams go back to the 7th century and initially, had probably more of religious purification significance.
Water is central in Moroccan massage. Hot and tepid water is used for both washing and dousing. The ritual is performed in stages and begins with a hot steam room for sweating and relaxing the muscles. A warm room is used for sitting and massage on the floor. The full-body massage consists mainly of fast stroking. The movements are like kneading dough, as the body is pummelled, stretched, twisted, bent then subsequently scrubbed with a brush. Lastly a cool down room, at room temperature containing couches is used for resting and a well-deserved lie down and a soothing glass of tea.
Lots of energy is needed to perform this sort of massage, and the vigour of the strokes revitalizes your body and shifts you into an altogether different state of mind. It is an invigorating way to lose stress and also leaves the recipient feeling like they have a new layer of skin.
