Stimulating massage techniques to re-awaken the body and mind

Russian massage - is a system of therapeutic massage developed in the former Soviet Union. Massage was not studied or used scientifically in Russia until 1860. Treatment methods were developed further after World War II when pharmaceuticals were in short supply. Research was undertaken by Russian physiologists to investigate the benefits of using natural healing treatments. They developed techniques to reverse atrophy in muscles and help stimulate new growth. Unlike other massage therapies, Russian massage is based on the physiology of a dysfunction rather than on anatomy as the principal guideline for treatment.

Russian massage uses the basic strokes of classical massage, changing them so each stroke provides the client with the least invasive and most comfortable treatment. Each stroke in Russian Massage has a known physiological effect on a healthy or dysfunctional body. Therapists don't use their wrists or single digit pressure, instead using shoulders or elbows as the primary sources of strength for deep work. One can expect a wide range of movements during a Russian massage such as; stretching or kneading motions, gliding, relaxing strokes, rubbing actions and continuous-motion strokes. Movements are fast and vigorous and designed to stimulate the venous system and bring blood circulation up. A person receiving a Russian massage will also experience a warming sensation because most of the movements generate lots of friction. Patients describe it as "waking up" both body and mind. It has been used to increase circulation of blood and lymphatic flow, to stimulate production of endorphins, control physical and mental stress, and to increase range of movement.
